The Ciesla Foundation makes films that make a difference.

The Ciesla Foundation produces and distributes award-winning films about strong and important, but often unknown, Jewish heroes. Its mission is to educate and inform audiences about social and public interest issues of the past and present through storytelling and filmmaking.

Based in Washington, D.C., The Ciesla Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public, tax exempt education foundation that relies on the generosity and support from donors like you. With the help of your tax-deductible contribution to the Ciesla Foundation we can preserve the legacy of the slugger Hank Greenberg and other under known Jewish heroes. Our films would not be possible without the support of our wonderful contributors.

Our latest project, The Rosenwald Schools, is about Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears-Roebuck and a remarkable early twentieth century philanthropist. Rosenwald made his contributions during the era of segregation, directing his efforts towards supporting the educational and artistic aims of African Americans. Rosenwald was driven to this work by what he felt was an affinity between the experience of discrimination by black and Jewish people. In all, Rosenwald funded over 5,000 rural schools for African Americans across the South, an urban YMCA program that impacted many northern black communities and an astonishing grant program that provided financial assistance for an entire generation of black artists, writers and intellectuals. In part because of his modesty, Rosenwald’s name is less well known than contemporaries like Carnegie and Rockefeller, yet his thoughtful and generous philanthropy makes him their equal.
