September 18, 2024 marks 90 years since Detroit Tigers player Hank Greenberg took a stand as a Jew and did not play baseball on Yom Kippur, but rather attended services at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
Former Detroiter Aviva Kempner – writer, producer, and director of the documentary film The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg and its re-release 25 years later – will be our special guest for this exciting program that will focus on the life and legacy of slugger Hank Greenberg. We will hear from baseball experts and people who personally knew our heroic Jewish Hall of Famer.
In partnership with Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation, Jewish Historical Society of Michigan, and The Ciesla Foundation.

The Bethesda Big Train honors barrier breaker and Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg by retiring his number 5 at the Thursday, June 23 Big Train baseball game. Greenberg’s #5 will hang on the outfield wall at Shirley Povich Field in perpetuity next to the numbers of baseball’s two other historic barrier breakers, Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente.
Before the game, Aviva Kempner, producer of the documentary The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, will give a talk about what Greenberg meant to the Jewish community and to America. Rabbi David Shneyer will entertain. During the game, Rabbi David will perform a Yiddish Take Me Out to the Ball Game. Come out and have a great time while keeping the legacy of one of America’s all-time great Jewish superstars alive.
The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg screens as part of NMAJH’s DOCtober film series and Chasing Dreams exhibit. Featuring Director Aviva Kempner in conversation with Professor of Religion and advisor to Chasing Dreams, Rabbi Rebecca T. Alpert, Temple University (Out of Left Field: Jews and Black Baseball).
